Player Spotlight: Quarterback Waelyn Baliles

QB1 for the Colts confident heading into year 3 as a starter

As the offseason heats up across northwest Georgia, optimism is growing around the Coahulla Creek Colts football program — and much of that excitement starts under center with quarterback Waelyn Baliles.

After helping guide the Colts to a strong finish in 2025, Baliles enters the 2026 season with confidence, leadership, and high expectations for both himself and his team. The rising signal-caller isn’t shying away from lofty goals either. From individual accolades to playoff aspirations, Baliles believes Coahulla Creek is building toward something significant.

“I want to be the All-Region QB1 and even better, the All-Region MVP,” Baliles said. “I also want to lead the region in passing yards.”

Those ambitions reflect the mindset of a quarterback determined to elevate every aspect of his game. The rising senior totaled 1,883 total yards during the 2025 season (1,533 passing, 350 rushing), and had 17 total touchdowns. These numbers garnered Baliles 7-2A All-Region 2nd Team QB.

But while personal success is important, Baliles made it clear that team accomplishments remain the priority heading into the fall.

“I want to go to the state playoffs and win the first round,” he said.

That confidence didn’t appear overnight. According to Baliles, Coahulla Creek’s late-season surge in 2025 helped reshape the mentality inside the locker room and laid the foundation for the team’s offseason approach.

“It gave our team and me confidence that we can win games that we are the underdog in no matter who we are playing against,” Baliles explained.

That belief could prove invaluable in a region loaded with competitive programs. Winning close games and overcoming adversity are often what separate playoff teams from everyone else, and Baliles believes the Colts are beginning to embrace that identity.

One of the biggest reasons for optimism is Baliles’ playmaking ability. While many quarterbacks thrive strictly within structure, the Coahulla Creek quarterback feels his greatest strength comes when things become chaotic.

“I think the strongest part of my game is the ability to improvise when the play breaks down,” he said. “I can keep the play alive and make a play downfield, which ties into quick decision making and trusting the throw.”

That ability to extend plays gives Coahulla Creek an added dimension offensively. Defenses can cover well initially, only to watch Baliles escape pressure and create explosive plays outside the pocket. In today’s game, quarterbacks who can improvise and remain calm under pressure are increasingly valuable — and Baliles believes that trait is central to his development.

Still, despite the confidence and big-play ability, Baliles is focused on refining the finer details of the quarterback position. Rather than settling for simply completing passes, he wants to become more precise with where the football is placed.

“I think I need to improve ball placement,” Baliles said. “I can make any throw on the field every time, but turning a five-yard gain into a 20-yard gain can depend on how I place the ball. I need to become a consistent perfect-placement quarterback.”

That level of self-awareness is often what separates good quarterbacks from great ones. Baliles already believes he possesses the arm talent necessary to attack every area of the field. Now, the focus is on maximizing opportunities after the catch and becoming more efficient on a play-to-play basis.

As the 2026 season approaches, expectations are continuing to rise for both Baliles and the Colts. With a confident quarterback, a team that believes in itself, and momentum from last season carrying into the offseason, Coahulla Creek could be one of the more intriguing teams to watch in the region this fall.

And if Baliles reaches the goals he has set for himself, the Colts may not just compete for a playoff spot — they could become a team nobody wants to face once they get there.
