Coahulla Creek loses lead late, and can’t reclaim it
The Colts came out Friday night fighting against Union County for their last away game of the regular season. Showing energy and determination in the first half carrying pride from last game, the Colts fell short against the Panthers. Head Coach Drew Carter tells us “we did some good things, but we were inconsistent.” The offense moved the ball well early, and the defense held strong to give the team an early lead that they held throughout most of the game.
During the first and second quarter our Colts made some outstanding plays. With WR Wyatt Mann making great catches and great yardage he set himself up to score a touchdown giving Colts a 7-0 lead. Mann finished with 6 catches, for 123 receiving yards. Later, senior kicker Edward Alvarez made a field goal to then lead Colts 10-6 before the second half. Our defense held up really well during the whole game. Coach Carter explains how he thought “the defense played really, really well.”

However, stepping into the second half of the game we saw a change. Costly penalties began to pile up for the Colts, slowing the Colts momentum and giving Union County the chance to fight back. Carter emphasizes how “we didn’t handle it great. It frustrated us and we played too emotional after that and it interrupted our game flow.” Frustration showed on the sidelines and emotions ran high with our players clearly very disappointed as mistakes began to add up.
Despite the setbacks, the Colts continued to battle until the final whistle. The effort and grit were evident throughout the game. Although the final score did not go their way, the team proved they could compete at a high level when disciplined and focused. Coach Carter notes “It is just really disappointing in how some of the penalties that went against us. I told the team that’s out of our control so it’s not something that wins or loses you the game.” The Colts played the game with great effort. The players were flying around with energy and keeping their cool the entire game. Carter stated “we were physical most of the night, and we were making plays, but we just couldn’t string things together when we needed to.”
As the Colts turn the page from a tough loss, their focus now shifts to the next challenge. This coming Friday our Colts take on the North Murray Mountaineers. With homecoming taking place we expect a big crowd to cheer on the young men and women who represent Coahulla Creek, along with cheering on most importantly our very own players. The team is determined to bounce back in front of their fans and show the progress they made from this loss. This week in practice will be all about discipline, focus, and cleaning up the mistakes from Union County, with kickoff at 7:30, it would be great for everyone to join us at Colt Stadium Friday for a great night presenting our homecoming court, and for a fight against the Mountaineers!
