Coahulla Creek competitive, but still needs work after first preseason game

Head Coach Drew Carter was pleased overall with the outcome of Friday’s Jamboree game vs. Model and LaFayette. In the first game vs. LaFayette the Colts let up one big play at the very end, leading to a 7-6 deficit. Coach Carter says “the mistake that was on the play was totally fixable.” With the Colts having only been in pads for 4 days, they held a competitive fight against the Ramblers. 

In the first period of the game Coahulla Creek forced a fumble, giving the offense a chance to get on the board first. The Colts were flying around and fast getting to the ball, and Coach Carter felt like the team “was making some big plays on the offensive side of the ball.” 

Following the fumble recovery, Waelyn Baliles connected with Wyatt Mann for a 25 yard pickup, setting up a 31 yard field goal by Edward Alvarez giving the Colts a 3-0 lead. Into the 2nd period vs. the Ramblers, the Colts forced another fumble deep in opponent territory, setting up another field goal by Alvarez, which brought the Colts lead to 6-0. The long run in the final seconds of the mini-game vs. LaFayette gave the Ramblers a 7-6 lead. 

As the Colts headed back out to the field to take on the Model Blue Devils, both teams saw action from their varsity and JV squads. The Colts handled the transition from Varsity to JV naturally as Coach Carter thought the boys “regrouped pretty well, because they had a couple of big plays here and there, but we didn’t let that spiral into two, three, four bad plays.” The JV got their first taste of some Friday night lights, with many 9th graders getting their first ever high school football action. Model produced the lone score in the mini-game, giving them a 7-0 advantage. As the team fell short against the Blue Devils coach Carter tells us “They did a good job playing aggressive.” 

As we kick off our season next Thursday night at Northwest Whitfield, Coach Carter is expecting to see some good things from our players. He tells us “the fact that we got the two scrimmages is huge, I was kind of talking about that to the guys, so we got a huge advantage (over last year, only having 1 preseason scrimmage), because I think there’s a lot of stuff our guys did that looks really good out there.” 

The Colts know what needs to be cleaned up as they head into their final preseason game, and they will focus on correcting those mistakes this week. The Colts hit the road for Calhoun Friday night to take on the Gordon Central Warriors. Kickoff is set for 7pm, so make sure you are there to support our Colts!
