“Starting to find our identity”

Colts looking for continued improvement vs. Rockmart

The Colts fought hard in last week’s game against Sonoraville. Several mistakes cost the Creek points on the scoreboard, but resilience is prominent in this team. The Colts have been putting in the work to prepare to play at home again this Friday. They face a difficult challenge facing Rockmart, so they are pushing to further improve their game.

Even though the scoreboard did not reflect it, last week showed several marked moments of progress. They pulled in their first touchdown of the season, and had their highest offensive yardage output. Head Coach Drew Carter had several positive comments on the game against Sonoraville. “I think the biggest thing is that we started to find our identity. We found some run schemes that we were having some success with and some guys that were clicking with it.” Carter mentions several names that have been positively impacting the offensive game including Maddux Jackson, Tyler Douglas, Kobe King, Wyatt Mann, and Chris Ewart. Carter tells us that Waelyn is “having some success with, and finding some of his favorite targets” since last week’s game.

The Colts came close to scoring several times against Sonoraville, but didn’t fully execute their assignments once they got into the redzone. Senior Offensive Lineman Isaac Mcgill recognized his team’s shortcomings from last week. “I thought we played well last game, but we just couldn’t finish… We got in the red zone a lot, but we only scored once. We really could be scoring a lot more than we are.” Coach Carter had the same remarks towards last Friday’s performance. “Offensively we’ve gotta finish drives. We had two, three, maybe even four more drives that could have got points on the board. But a mistake, maybe a turnover, a penalty, or a missed assignment, that cost us not being able to get those points and we have got to be able to cash in on each one of those.”

The Colts want to have a different performance going up against Rockmart. Additionally, they have recognized that they will face a competitive opponent. Rockmart is well known power, winning 8 consecutive region championship, and was the 2A State runner-up last season. Coach Carter notes “We have a tall task in front of us, and we know that… [but] it’s a huge opportunity to be able to go out there and compete against them.” Playing such a high quality team will help the Colts assess where they stand at this point in the season.

The players are holding their heads high going into this game though. Wide receiver and defensive back Elijah Faraji had a positive response when asked about his mentality going into a game against such a quality opponent. He replies that “I am still going to play my heart out. It doesn’t matter who I’m playing, or what they do, or what they look like. I’m still going to play with my heart, and I hope my team feels the same way.” The feeling seems mutual from Isaac McGill, and seemingly the rest of the team. Isaac says “I think we need to play a really good team to learn and to keep growing and to show that we have fight in us and won’t give up because that will really test your character.”

Tomorrow night will be elementary spirit night, where each feeder elementary school (Beaverdale, Cohutta, Dawnville, and Varnell) will be recognized.

The Creek will face the Rockmart Yellow Jackets tomorrow with kickoff at 7:30. The game can be heard on the Coahulla Creek Sports Network.
