After a vigorous thunderstorm postponed the rivalry game to Saturday, the Colts suffered a heavy loss against the Northwest Bruins. The inconsistency on the turf became the dagger to winning in this highly anticipated game. “It was a lot of simple stuff that led to really big things,” Coach Carter stated. The Colts fell to the Bruins 35-0.
The Creek struggled to gain yardage at the beginning, handing the ball over to allow the Bruins offense to jump up 14-0 by the end of the first quarter. “Defensively, up front we had some misreads and definitely some miscommunication,” Senior Carson Weaver explained after the game, “…we would let the little things get to us.” Weaver had a couple of great tackles to withhold the Bruins from moving the chains, but ultimately it was not enough to keep them out of the endzone.
Action was ramped up in the second quarter with defensive end Chevy Joyce firing through Northwest’s offensive line, tackling Nuckolls for a loss of yards. “We had a couple of costly turnovers that were kind-of mental errors,” Carter commented. Following a big defensive stand, the Colts got the ball back, but turned it back over to the Bruins with a muffed punt; but then shortly after regaining possession when Chris Ewart forced his first of 2 fumbles in the game. However, later in the 2nd, the Bruins recovered their second fumble, returning it for a TD, and going ahead 21-0. Center Isaac McGill notes how being able to read the defense is a key aspect to being productive on offense, and that he struggled a lot with communication this game; stating how “it is a learning curve for them all”, and he “wishes to correct this for the next game.”
By halftime, the Colts were trailing 28-0. Carter did point out how the team responded well emotionally to being behind, and noticed how the team never “laid down” which really represented their character throughout this game. He believes this was a positive, and helped push the team through the rest of the game.
Coahulla’s energy surged when they entered the field after halftime with Kobe King dislodging the ball from Jones to begin the third, resulting in an incomplete pass with Wyatt Mann right behind them the next play to put the Bruins at a loss for yards. King had a 23 yard pickup to make the longest play of the game for the Colts, and Tyler Douglas, Chris Ewart, Jackson Lowery all fought to apply pressure on Northwest’s offense and delivered in the third quarter. By the fourth quarter though, the score was 35-0. Chris Ewart’s 2nd fumble recovery gave the offense another chance, but the Colts could not put up points on the scoreboard. The final score ended with the Bruins on to 35-0.
The consensus after the game was that it was not the preparation that hurt us, but rather the deliverance on gameday. “The coaches gave us a great gameplan, and we were dialed in at practice during the week,” explained McGill, “we just struggled to execute on game day.” The team fought, but ultimately had many small mistakes that led to bigger issues. Weaver also goes to say the loss was “upsetting and disappointing,” but he is determined to correct the mistakes in order to “dial in” next week for Chattooga.
The Colts kickoff at Chattooga next Friday at 7:30. They’re looking to correct their mistakes from this game, in order to perform well next week.
