Colts looking to “young, but talented” group to make plays in 2024.
A large and productive senior class at the wide receiver position prevented many underclassmen from getting on the field last year. In fact, there are only 2 returning players from last year’s squad that even caught passes in varsity action, but that’s not stopping the Coahulla Creek coaching staff from expecting big things from this group in 2024.
Ready to emerge as difference makers on the edge are junior Kobe King and sophomore Wyatt Mann. King started the majority of the ’23 season as cornerback, and will be looking to apply that experience to the offensive side of the ball. Mann is the only returning player who caught a touchdown pass last year. He was a bright spot in the spring game, catching a 52 yard TD pass vs. Gordon Lee back in May.
At the slot positions, Coach Chad Brewer (who has transitioned to coaching WRs), says the Colts will feature a rotation of guys, specifically seniors’ Carson Weaver and Andrew Russell, and sophomore Tyler Douglas.
Weaver carried the ball 26 times for 105 yards on offense last year, and will continue to see opportunities to run the ball in ’24, but will also be of value to the passing game this year, playing in more of hybrid RB/WR role.
Russell was another bright spot in the spring game, turning a short pass into a 29 yard touchdown. His run-after-catch ability, and shiftiness will be an asset to the Colts offense.
Douglas provides supreme dependability, catching those underneath passes. Although he was primarily a defensive starter in ’23, Douglas saw some snaps on the offensive side, registering 7 catches for 48 yards.
Coach Brewer also mentioned that “(Sophomore) Brandon Manis and (freshman) Silas Pledger have made plays during fall camp, and are improving each practice”, and that (junior) Landon Bryant and (freshman) Devean Espitia will “also provide quality depth at the position.”
